 In 2001, Sherry Hollingsworth developed Assistive Technology Tracker. AT Tracker, enables agencies to track 'points of contact' for services provided by that agency. An agency can track referrals, assessments, technical support and check in/out equipment. AT Tracker was designed to track individuals using assistive technology or any service that needs to be tracked by an agency.

In 2003, Sherry developed Equipment Tracker. Equipment Tracker was developed for those agencies that need to track large amounts of equipment that is checked out/in to individuals. Equipment Tracker also enables the user to track equipment usage, equipment disposal and equipment repair.

In the last 25 years The Spastics Society of Karnataka has come a long way, expanding it's activities to create a comprehensive rehabilitation package for persons with Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Multiple Disabilities and Learning Disabilities.

Currently SSK provides multidisciplinary diagnostic and rehabilitation services for persons with neuromuscular and developmental disabilities. Work at the Spastics Society of Karnataka, involves developing Individualized Education/Rehabilitation plans and training each special person appropriately to achieve maximum possible independence in all aspects of life namely Physical, Economic, Emotional and Social.

Our long term vision is INCLUSION of persons with Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities into mainstream society.

Assistive Technology has come as a welcome and much needed aid to this process of rehabilitation. With Assistive Technology, we look forward to creating an impact on the special population, enhancing abilities and releasing latent potential of persons with special needs.

Already, following an intensive initial training by Ms. Bridget Ames of the Pacer Centre, Minnesota, the SSK team has started trying out various AT resources with Persons with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Learning Disabilities and Multiple Disabilities.

The Spastics Society of Karnataka acknowledges the generous inputs by all the vendors listed on AT Vendors in this Wiki. Thanks to the Pacer Centre, Minnesota, AT has come to Bangalore, India at the SSK. Acknowledgements are also due to IBM who have donated the necessary hardware and office automation systems necessary to make Assistive Technology possible.

The Spastics Society of Karnataka's Assistive Technology Centre is situated in a 1200 sq ft. building at the SSK's Bangalore, Indira Nagar premises. It is scheduled to be formally inaugurated sometime in the middle of 2008. The SSK looks forward to providing consultation in the use of AT for persons with all disabilities and also to familiarizing persons from all walks of life, including teachers, schools, employers and parents with the possibilities created by the use of Assistive Technology. We look forward to making INCLUSION truly possible with Assistive Technology.

Welcome to the Possibilities and Dreams wiki!

In 2005 PACER Center and India partnered to hold the first joint US-India technology conference. An outcome of that conference was a relationship with a non profit organization The Spastics Society of Karnataka(SSK). Over the course of the next two years a plan emerged to launch an assistive technology center at the SSK modeled after PACER Center's Simon Technology Center (STC).

IBM India donated 11 computers and various assistive technology vendors donated software and devices valued at $18,000.00. A new 1,400 square foot building would house the new equipment and be home to this new technology center.

In October of 2007 Bridget Ames, coordinator of the Simon Technology Center, conducted 10 days of technology training at the new technology center in Bangalore, India on the donated software and devices. In November of 2007 Rabidran Isaac, Occupational Therapist at the SSK, traveled to Minnesota USA for follow up training.

This wiki is our central meeting place to plan and discuss all things related to assistive technology and help the SSK develop their skills in this specialized field. The hope is that the impact of introducing assistive technology will affect not only the SSK and their city of Bangalore but the nation of India. Check back regularly to review any new announcements, ponder and pose AT Questions, and share Success Stories. AT Resources will help expand knowledge of assistive technology while AT Vendors will link to vendors and product information contained in the SSK AT library.

An outcome of this conference was to create a model assistive technology center in the city of Bangalore. Out of the many interested organizations, PACER partnered with the Spastics Society of Karnataka (SSK). Recently celebrating their 25th anniversary the SSK provides a wide range of services to children and young adults with disabilities.

Over the course of the next year IBM executive, Kristi Wieser facilitated phone conferences with representatives from the SSK and PACER. Loose thoughts and plans began to take shape. Assistive technology vendors donated software and equipment totaling approximately $18,000.00 to this new center in Bangalore. IBM India donated 10 PC computers, 4 Young Explorers and tech support for the first year of the center.

In October of 2007, Bridget Ames, Coordinator of the Simon Technology Center, traveled to Bangalore to train select staff of the SSK on the donated software and devices. In a whirlwind 8 days Bridget trained the SSK staff on approximately 80 different programs and devices. The staff receiving the training at the SSK quickly learned a vast amount of information in a short amount of time. Representing a variety of professional disciplines they began to think about how the tools they were learning might impact the education of the students they worked with. As the training wrapped up, a three year plan unfolded that includes training additional staff members at the SSK, developing parent trainings, conducting individual assistive technology consultations, and networking with other disability organizations to make the impact of assistive technology felt at a local and eventually national level.

In November of 2007, Rabidran Isaac, Coordinator of the SSK Assistive Technology Center, journeyed to Minnesota to continue the training started in India. During his visit, Rabi attended a variety of PACER workshops, met with local assistive technology vendors, visited with parent advocates and much more.

During her visit to Bangalore, Bridget had the opportunity to introduce assistive technology to a variety of young men with disabilities. The impact of such programs with features such as word prediction and text to speech was immediate. And that is the whole point of assistive technology, making a positive difference in the life of someone who has a need. Assistive Technology has the potential to change the landscape of possibilities for people with disabilities in not only Bangalore but in all of India.
