The Spastics Society of Karnataka is a Non Governmental Organization dedicated to the welfare of Persons with Neuromuscular and Developmental Disabilities. It was started in 1982, by Ms. Mithu Alur, parent of a Spastic Child.

In the last 25 years The Spastics Society of Karnataka has come a long way, expanding it's activities to create a comprehensive rehabilitation package for persons with Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Multiple Disabilities and Learning Disabilities.

Currently SSK provides multidisciplinary diagnostic,diagnostic assesment and evaluationrehabilitation services , for persons with Neuromuscularneuromuscular and Developmental Disabilities, besides working intensively with persons diagnosed with any of the abovedevelopmental conditions.disabilities. Work at the Spastics Society of Karnataka, involves developing Individualized Education/Rehabilitation plans and training each special person appropriately to achieve maximum possible independence in all aspects of life namely Physical, Economic, Emotional and Social.

Our long term vision is INCLUSION of persons with Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities into mainstream society.

AssititveAssistive Technology has come as a welcome and much needed aid to this process of rehabilitation. With Assistive Technology, we look forward to creating an impact on the special population, enhancing abilities and releasing latent potential of persons with special needs.

Already, following an intensive initial training by Ms. Bridget Ames of the Pacer Centre, Minnesotta,Minnesota, the SSK team has started trying out various AT resources with Persons with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Learning Disabilities and Multiple Disbailities.Disabilities.

The Spastics Society of Karnataka acknowledges the generous inputs by all the vendors listed on AT Vendors in this Wiki. Thanks to the Pacer Centre, Minnesota, AT has come to Bangalore, India at the SSK. Acknowledgements are also due to IBM who have donated the necessary hardware and office automation systems necessary to make Assistive Technology possible.

The Spastics Society of Karnataka's Assistive Technology Centre is situated in a 1200 sq ft. building at the SSK's Bangalore, Indira Nagar premises. It is scheduled to be formally inaugurated sometime in the middle of 2008. The SSK looks forward to providing consultation in the use of AT for persons with all disabilities and also to familiarizing persons from all walks of life, including teachers, schools, employers and parents with the possibilities created by the use of Assistive Technology. We look forward to making INCLUSION truly possible with Assistive Technology.
